My name is Alastair Scott. Welcome to my homepage.
I was born in 1966, in the town of Bellshill. I am just over 29, but only in hex. Until 1994, I lived in Hamilton. After I married Hazel, I moved to Glasgow. I now stay in Uddingston and we have two boys, Iain aged 9 and Alexander aged 3.
My secondary school was Hamilton Grammar, which I left after 5th year in 1983. I started work with Clydesdale Bank in the Newmains branch, near Wishaw. I completed all the exams of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, becoming a Member in 1988 when I was based in the Bank's London office. However, I had already decided that I would like to go to University.
In 1990, I began a four-years Honours course at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, in Accountancy and Computer Science. I graduated in 1994 with a 2(i) Honours degree. I began training as a Chartered Accountant with Hardie Caldwell in Glasgow, becoming a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland on passing my final exams in 1997.
Since early on in my training, I had decided that I would prefer a position in industry, rather than carrying out audits for the rest of my life. I got a job with John Dewar and Sons, the whisky arm of the Bacardi drinks corporation. As my career progressed, I had some considerable involvement with IT. Following an internal reorganisation my old job disappeared and my new role had a significant internal audit focus. I decided to take the option of voluntary redundancy and to return to full-time study to develop my IT skills. In 2007, I graduated with an MSc in IT with Distinction from the University of Glasgow in 2007.
I am now doing a PhD at Strathclyde University in Carbon Footprinting for Housing and Small Businesses. The focus of my research to date has been in the energy consumption and associated carbon emissions of IT equipment, and developing methodologies to reduce energy consumption.
Full details of my career can be found on my Curriculum Vitae.
