Alfred Philip Hicks (1884-1918)

Alfred Philip Hicks was born on 10 September 1884 in Perthville near Bathurst, NSW, Australia, the second of the ten children of Philip Hicks (1854-1932) and his wife Eleanor Shute (1860-1943). He was married on 21 February 1912 at Bathurst to Ellen (Nellie) Brown (1887-1959).

Alfred enlisted in the Australian army on 4 April 1916 at the Depot Camp, Bathurst. His attestation form describes him as a natural born British subject, he weighed 165 pounds, was 6 feet tall, his occupation was "fitter labourer (railway)" and his religious denomination was Baptist. Alfred eventually sailed to England, arriving there on 29 January 1917 and later proceeded to France, landing on 14 March 1917. He served with the 13th Battalion, Austrlian Imperial Forces in France and was wounded in action on 1 April 1918. Having been evacuated to England, Alfred was admitted to Dover Military Hospital, but died on 8 May 1918.

His funeral took place on 13 May 1918 at Little Cornard Church, Suffolk, where he was buried alongside his cousin Maurice East, who died on 1 May 1918. He was entitled to the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Alfred was survived by his wife and two children, Marie and Ethel Daisy Hicks.
