Charles Hicks (1896-1917)

Charles Hicks was born on 23 August 1896 at South Shields, England, the first of the ten children of Charles Hicks (1867-1929) and his wife Margaret Garvock (1870-1956). Along with the rest of the family, he migrated to Australia in 1912, settling in Perthville near Bathurst, NSW.

His attestation form describes him as having a bronzed complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair, he weighed 140 lbs, was 5 feet 7 1/2 inches tall and his occupation was "gardener." A letter of consent for enlistment in the Army was provided by his mother on 2 June 1916 and he was soon posted to the 4th Reinforcement Draft of the 45th Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces. Charles sailed first to England and then on to France, where he arrived on 8 January 1917. He was killed in action on 7 June 1917.

Charles has no known grave, but is listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial and was entitled to the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
