Walter Hicks (1889-1918)

Walter Hicks was born on 21 May 1889 at Bathurst, NSW, Australia, the fifth of the ten children of Philip Hicks (1854-1932) and his wife Eleanor Shute (1860-1943).

According to his attestation form, he had dark brown hair, weighed 159 lbs and was 6 feet tall, his occupation being "carrier." He officially enlisted in the Army on 23 March 1916 and was posted to the 4th reinforcement draft of the 56th Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces. Walter sailed first to England and then on to France, where he arrived on the 15 December 1916. Having been appointed Lance Corporal on 31 May 1917, he was killed in action on 22 August 1918.

Walter was buried in Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery, Somme, France and was entitled to the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
