This site is devoted to the Timperley family of Hintlesham in Suffolk,
England and other related families.
Hintlesham Hall, the home of the family,
was built in the 1570s by Thomas Timperley (c.1524-1594), extended in the
Georgian period and now houses a top class hotel
and restaurant.
His father died in 1528 and Thomas became a ward of his grandfather the 3rd
Duke of Norfolk (Letters and Papers Henry VIII, iv.6248 (21)) He appeared
at the Exchequer in 1551 to present proof that his ancestors had held a court
leet at Hintlesham since the time of Edward I. Coming to Framlingham in July
1553, he took the oath of allegiance to Queen Mary there on 14th July and became
one of the two Members of Parliament for Bramber, Sussex in her first
parliament. This was achieved through the influence of the Duke of Norfolk. He
was later granted an annuity of £20 from the Crown.
By 1557, he had married Audrey, daughter of Sir Nicholas Hare of Bruisyard,
Suffolk (d.1557) who was Master of the Rolls (1553-1557). Having rebuilt Hintlesham Hall, which was probably completed about 1579, he
also bought, after his son's marriage, estates of freehold and copyhold land in
Flowton, Burstall and elsewhere.
Thomas died at Hintlesham on 13th January 1594 and there is an elaborate
monument to him, his wife and 9 children, as well as to his son Nicholas and
his family in Hintlesham Church.
He was succeeded by his son, Nicholas Timperley (c.1564-1624).
Ownership of Hintlesham Hall eventually passed to his third son Thomas' son, Henry Timperley, went into exile with King James II,
dying in France in c1689. He was succeeded by his only surviving child -

Holton Thomas Timperley (c.1524-1594)
Thomas was born about 1524, the eldest
child of William Timperley and Margaret Howard, an illegitimate daughter of
Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (d.1554). She later became the third wife of
Sir Henry D'Oyly of Pond Hall, Hadleigh, Suffolk.
Thomas sat again
in Parliament as M.P. for Great Yarmouth, 1563-1567, and was a Commissioner for
the subsidy voted to Queen Elizabeth during this Parliament. In 1569 he was
Controller of the Household of Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk and later receiver in
Suffolk, for the Duke, by 1572 and for Philip, 13th Earl of Arundel by 1589.
Nicholas Timperley (c.1564-1624)
Nicholas was married to Anne Markham,
who had a number of interesting family connections.
He was succeeded by his
son, Thomas
Timperley (c.1584-1651).
Anne Markham
Only child of William Markham (by 1533-1571) of Little
Oakley, Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Montagu (d.1569). Anne's grandfather was
Sir Edward Montagu of Boughton,
Northamptonshire. One of her cousins was Sir John Harington (1561-1612),
writer and inventor of the water-closet. There is a family history of the

William Markham (by 1533-1571)
William was a son of Sir John Markham
(before 1486-1559) and his third wife, Anne Strelley.
Sir Thomas Timperley (c.1584-1651)
Married firstly, Elizabeth daughter
of John Shelly of Mitchelgrove Sussex and secondly, Elizabeth Brocke, mother of
Thomas.
Thomas
Timperley (c.1617-1686)
Henry Timperley (c1689-17--) thought to have been born posthumously, probably in France. Henry was initially placed under the guardianship of his Mother, Susanna, but by 1705 his guardian was the lawyer Henry Eyre. In 1710 he was recognised as Lord of the Manor of Hintlesham and in the following year married Etheldreda or Audrey Mannock, a daughter of Sir William Mannock of Gifford's Hall, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk. She died, without children, before 1 October 1714 and Henry sold his estate at Hintlesham in 1720 to Richard Powys, a Principal Clerk of the Treasury. Henry, the last Timperley Lord of the Manor of Hintlesham, is thought to have died abroad.

The younger Henry's uncle, John, born about 1670, buried 31 March 1721, Hintlesham, married 1701, East Bergholt, to Elizabeth Brunning of Hintlesham, buried 5 June 1740, Hintlesham
Only child - Sarah Timperley (bap.1746-1829), baptised 7 April
1746, Hintlesham, died 23 March 1829, probably at Stratford St. Mary, married
23 July 1765, Hintlesham, to John Hicks, baptised 25 February 1743/4, Layham,
Suffolk, died 7 July 1818, at the Hall, Stratford St. Mary, Suffolk, buried 14
July 1818, Hintlesham.
