Interest in the extent to which reproducible capital can substitute for the
life support services provided by the natural environment was stimulated by
space exploration. In 1991 a self-contained life-support system for humans
was built in Arizona at a cost of some $200 million. It was intended that
this would, using only energy from outside, support 8 people for 2 years.
It failed to do this. The facility still exists and has been used for further
experiments. For more information visit this web link.
